This is really simple. When these huge holes appear on the Sun once or twice a week, it indicates that there is more energy on the planets. More energy on all planets results in a few things. The solar wind responsible for this is flowing from a hole in the sun's atmosphere. It is expected to influence our planet for the next 2 to 3 days, with a 40% chance of continued geomagnetic storms on Jan. 27th-Jan. 28th. Arctic sky watchers should remain alert for auroras this weekend. The magnetic structure of coronal holes is a unipolar open field topology, which allows the solar wind to escape more readily, and as a result coronal holes are the source of faster-than-normal solar wind. The fast solar wind from coronal holes can cause minor to moderate #GeomagneticStorms . Regular readers of the SWS Monthly Solar and Geophysical Summary, or those people who receive SWS Warning services, have probably seen the term "coronal hole on the Sun" used quite frequently. Not surprising because in the declining phase of solar cycles, coronal holes are the sources of many of the disturbances to the #ionosphere (and #HFcommunications ) and to the #geomagnetic field. X-ray images of the Sun often show large dark regions. These are called coronal holes. They may extend from the Sun's equator to its poles, or even in some cases, from pole to pole. Although in the 1960's they were found in X-ray images taken by sounding rockets and detected with the Sydney Chris Cross radio telescope (but not recognised for what they were), they were first seen most clearly in images taken by #astronauts on board the #Skylab space station in 1973 and 1974. The solar corona is the outer atmosphere of the #Sun , extending from the solar "surface" out into space. It is a region which is difficult to observe, being seen only during solar eclipses or with special equipment. A coronal hole is a large region in the corona which is less dense and is cooler than its surrounds. Such holes may appear at any time of the solar cycle but they are most common during the

Because they contain little solar material, they have lower temperatures and thus appear much darker than their surroundings. Coronal holes are visible in certain types of extreme ultraviolet light, which is typically invisible to our eyes, but is colorized here in purple for easy viewing. These coronal holes are important to understanding the space environment around Earth through which our technology and astronauts travel. Coronal holes are the source of a high-speed wind of solar particles that streams off the sun some three times faster than the slower wind elsewhere.
